San Francisco de Quito is the capital and most important city of not only Ecuador but also of the entire Latin America. El Panecillo is gorgeous hill located in the middle of the western side of the city of Quito. This volcanic origin hill top is visible from any part of the city and is certainly a must go. However, the primitive temple was destroyed from the roots by the Spanish colonizers in the sixteenth century.
Later El Panecillo became popular for its artistic Madonna statue of Virgin Mary with a child. The monument is assembled on a high pedestal on the top of El Panecillo. The monument comprises of seven thousand pieces aluminum pulled together in a beautiful artistic form. The monument was inaugurated by the eleventh archbishop of Ecuador.
The monument is about the virgin standing on top of a globe and is stepping on a snake, which is actually a classic Madonna iconography. This monument also has the wings which are claimed to be the only statue of Virgin Mary in the world to have wings that looks like an angel. This Madonna is one of the special types because it shows a virgin in movement that is practically dancing in contrast with the traditional static Madonna’s that were produced during the eighteenth century. The monument states that the woman represented by the statue is the Woman of the Apocalypse, as described in the Book of Revelation.
This legendary statue in Quito is an artistic masterpiece and reflective of the history and culture of the city. The El Panecillo till date remains the religious centre of the city and is well known for this. Moreover, if you go some yards away from the Madonna monument, there is an entrance to a large cistern called the Olla del Panecillo, which was legendarily said to be of ancient Inca origin.
