Because of the parched climate the topology of the natural-phenomenon is mainly arid but you’ll find some lush-green patches refreshingly adorning the Nuba Mountain’s dry landscape. One of the most interesting features of the region is that you won’t find any roads stretching through the Nuba ranges contrary to the other more crowded and commercial tourist destinations diluting the natural wilderness experience with their hectic tourist vehicles. You’ll find many quaint villages sheltered in the mountains which are only accessible through quite old walking paths offering an interesting glimpse of the idiosyncrasies and life-style of the native tribes, groups and multi-ethnic-villages.
The Nuba Mountains have bored the brunt of a Sudanese Civil-War after the Battalion forces of Volcano which were lead by Yousif Kuwa Mekki. They made their way to these mountains and started to recruit and train the local Nubas in warfare at Ethiopia’s remote camps. An omnipresent threat of an attack still exists despite the CPT (Comprehensive Peace Treaty) which was signed in 2005.
November till February is the best time to visit the mountains when the weather is pleasant and its recommended to avoid the torrential rains starting from October till May. Mountain Hiking and walking on trails aren’t the only things you can do while being there as you can also visit many charming-villages as well as hobnob with the locals to experience the local life style and spot many of the species of animals from many of the vantage points.
Don’t let the accommodation options worry you because you’ll find many campsites offering inexpensive accommodation at the Nuba Mountain’s base offering a beautiful natural escapade. You may also find some accommodation options in the villages too but you got to do your home work for that as some of the locals rent-out their rooms regularly for a night or two in order to make some money. But for a comfortable and luxurious experience you are recommended to head for Khartoum’s hotels including the Hotel Al-Salam Rotana, Hotel Sharga, Acropole Hotel and the Hotel Taka. Still you want more out of your living experience in the city you can also choose to live in the Hilton Khartoum which is an upscale but an expensive option.
