Malaysian long-haul cut-price airline, Air Asia X has announced the launch of cheapest flights to New Zealand ever. The cut-price airline made this announcement in Christchurch Square where a 1,000 people gathered today for the launch. The airline has quoted in a statement that “it will bring the “cheapest international airfares New Zealand has seen”. This sure has raised the hopes of New Zealand air travels and passengers from worldwide destinations planning to take flights to New Zealand.
With the arrival of Air Asia X in the local market, Christchurch travellers could fly to Europe for $1000 return airfares. In the ceremony today, Air Asia X announced one-way flights to Kuala Lumpur as low as 99 dollars and return flights in 200 dollars. Ten flights were given away to members of the public at this occasion. The ceremony was attended by senior Airline officers and Tourism leaders of the country.
These amazingly low flight fares are expected to hit the market in March or Aril next year. Whereas Flight tickets between Christchurch and the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur go on sale this Friday and are expected to sell for less than $200 one-way.
These low fares will also affect the competitor airline prices on the same route and are likely to undercut major airlines by as much as 50 per cent. According to statements and fare quotes on the airline’s website, return flights to Europe from Kuala Lumpur cost about 600 dollars. This means that for travellers coming to the UK, a return flight between Christchurch and London could cost just over 1000 Dollars.
Other flights that can be connected in the onward journey from Kuala Lumpur include flights to Thailand, Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Iran, Indonesia, Japan and Saudi Arabia.
Flight Centre national product manager James Broker said Air Asia X had done well with its Gold Coast operation, quoting: “We welcome anything that brings competition, and this will certainly do that.” He further added that flights from Christchurch could be so cheap that travellers from Auckland, Wellington and other centres would be enticed to the Garden City just to take advantage of these fares.
