As of March 22, 2011, Air Zimbabwe pilots are on strike and Air Zimbabwe flights since the first day of the strike to date have been cancelled.
Later last year, the airline upgraded its fleet by the addition of two new planes and also added more flights to Harare in its flight schedule from London. However, the pilots who ended last year’s September strike expecting to receive full arrears are back on strike due to partial payment made only.
Although the airline is requesting them to resume duties while the negotiations continue but according to experts, the negotiations have reached a deadlock and it is very unlikely that the pilots will put an end to the ongoing strike without receiving full payments of the arrears. However, according to sources, the management has stated that it is not in a financial state to make payments of outstanding salaries and allowances totaling to US$ 9 million approximately.
In this scenario, when the strike has reached its 5th day today on Saturday, the airline is using all possible means to update and inform its booked customers of the flight cancellations and requests patience. The customers booked on an Air Zimbabwe flight are requested to contact the airline directly and inquire for their flight schedule, refund or reservation status.
The Air Zimbabwe Pilot strike has grounded all domestic flights offered by the carrier as well as International, long haul and regional flights. The top destinations of Ari Zimbabwe include flights from London Gatwick Airport to Harare, Johannesburg, Bulawayo and Victoria Falls flights.
