Reports of smoke emanating from the cockpit compelled an American Airline jet, Boeing 777, to make a hasty landing at the Moncton, N.B airport, this Tuesday. The aircraft was heading to Chicago from London Heathrow. After the reports, the plane landed at Moncton at 3 pm approximately. Upon searching the plane under the Dieppe Fire Department, the cause of smoke was determined to be an electrical fire.
According to the director of operations at the Greater Moncton International, Chris Farmer, the electrical smell that was detected from the aircraft was discovered to be emanating from an overheated battery. The personnel further went on saying that although he wasn’t an aircraft engineer but the alarming incident signaled a fire hazard and hence, diverting to Moncton was a need of the time. He also informed that the plane was standing with doors open to let the smoke escape from the flying facility.
By 5:20 pm the Emergency crew, AT had done their job and left the airport. As Framer puts it, since that was an emergency call, they instantly put to use their emergency plan and went on notifying their emergency partners reflexively. Not only were the members of Dieppe Fire Department attending to the call but other men including Police Officers, ambulance crews and also the firefighters of the airport came in for a rescue. One of the airport authority’s spokesperson, Johanne Gallant reported that around 150 passengers on board were removed from the aircraft and they waited at the Moncton International Airport for other Airlines to send their planes, for picking them up. In the mean time, passengers were seated in a secure room where they did not have to go through custom clearance. However, according to AT officials the other plane that was originally destined to land in Moncton from New York at 6 p.m, will now be delayed until later Tuesday night.
