Well-established and older airlines do leave a legacy of their own, and when it comes to flag carriers, they have the additional duty of representing their countries internationally. Dutch flag carrier KLM has been offering special souvenirs for its Business class passengers and continues to do so for over the past 60 years.
The airline has been offering a collection of over 60 miniature ceramic ‘houses’. These houses are actual replicas of most of the settlements in and around the town of Delft, Amsterdam. All the replicas are multi-story and are designed in the same two colour theme of white and navy blue. Often, these replicas are utilised as containers for offering genever, the national liquor of Holland.
In order to highlight the entire collectables series of these Delft houses, all the 60 types are put on glass display at the KLM Crown lounge at the Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, the main operations hub of KLM. Every year, a new addition is made to the collection of these houses, thus every new design marks another year of anniversary marking KLM’s operational history.
Special editions of these houses are also made available, with the Dutch Royal Palace and the De Waag Cheese weighing House being provided to honeymoon couples and special VIP guests. The houses also simultaneously highlight the architectural simplicity of Delft, promoting tourism in the eyes of the international passenger community on board KLM’s flights.
KLM holds the rank of being the oldest commercial air operators, remaining active even during the times of the Second World War. It also is a member of the SkyTeam commercial aviation alliance.
