Perhaps opening its eyes to the Kenya Airways covered route with its help, KLM has finally embraced the possibility of wider network with additional profiting destination called Harare, Zimbabwe.
Currently, KLM supports Kenya airways code-shared flights for Harare Operations. The Dutch carrier used to operate to this destination until last millennium, 1999 to be precise. The current tentative plan shows three flights a week to both of the destinations. By both, we mean “Lusaka” Zambia as the other destination which was announced earlier in May this year.
Starting October 2012, the Amsterdam – Harare – Lusaka route shall operate with Airbus A330-200. Flight days shall be Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Flights leave Schiphol at 10.20 and arrive in Harare at 21.25, with the return departing Harare at 22.30 and arriving in Amsterdam at 10.20 the next day
KLM’ s M.D, Erik Varwijk said that KLM sees growth opportunities in Africa and that services to Luanda (Angola) and Lusaka (Zambia) have been launched this year following the 2011 start of Kigali (Rwanda) operations. He further added that this addition to KLM’s network strengthens its position in Africa.
This one is a much needed additional option for the popular destination. Emirates also started Harare operations recently, successfully! The ongoing KLM – Kenya Airways partnership flights shall continue the existing 11 flights a week as code-shared operation.
