The employee union of Lufthansa (UFO) is all set to launch a series of strikes on specified airports deemed as major destinations for the German-based airline. The reports came amidst claims made by the union regarding the general pay raise justified at 5% after a 3-year salary freeze. Lufthansa’s management announced that pay raise for their cabin crew will be set at 3.5%.
Employees have warned that strikes would last 5 hours at a time and that major walkouts would initiate on Friday. The UFO has further justified its actions by complaining of overwork for the airline at major airports. Meanwhile the administration has assured that it would try its utmost to stick to schedule and avoid any potential inconvenience to passengers. The alternative for the time-being would be to draft in cabin crews which are not part of the union.
The top management tending to the issue at hand also responded that owing to the financial extremities undergone by the competitive airline industry, the employee base should cooperate with Lufthansa. The airline has already slashed 3500 vacancies to realign profits at a nominal level. Lufthansa has received an impact of the strike in the stock market as well. The airlines’ shares fell by 1.8% during the morning trading at the Frankfurt stock exchange, making it the biggest decliner for the day.
