The massive expansion plan taken on by Oman Air constitutes the airline increasing its fleet size to 55 planes in 2017 alongside a flight schedule that includes three flights a week to India. These flights are expected to increase to five a week, with the 154-seater Boeing 737 aircraft being used as the prime means of transport. Also, the airline plans on increasing most of its routes to India to two flights a week instead of one as a bid to increase exchange as well as diplomatic ties with the subcontinent country.
Oman Air is currently flying two times a day on the Muscat to Mumbai, Muscat to Chennai and Muscat to New Delhi routes and is looking to double the frequency on the Muscat to Kochi and Muscat to Thiruvananthapuram itineraries. The airline had gained the rights to 5000 additional seats to India and will be using a major chunk of those seats in the new Muscat to Goa route, which will be functional by next year.
The month of November will see the increase of Oman Air’s flights to another subcontinent destination, Colombo, to two flights a day. Discussions are underway for increasing the frequency of the Kathmandu to Oman route to twice a day. The expansion plan Oman Air is undergoing currently does not include new arranged schedules to fly to cities in the United States yet.
This expansion plan will be accommodated by the increase in the airline’s fleet, with 16 of the ordered planes expected to be delivered to the airline staff within 12 months. Both wide body and narrow body planes will be joining the airline’s fleet, including the much awaited 787 Dreamliner and 787 900s. Two major airports of the country are also completing their expansion plans so as to shelter these new aeroplanes.
The new expansion plans Oman Air is undergoing and the increase of the frequency of its routes to many destinations across Asia will certainly help it gain a greater share of revenues and customers in the aviation industry.
