Rwanda Air is the National Airline of Rwanda. The airline has been granted rights to operate flights to Lusaka and Kigali recently. Lusaka, Zambia is one of Africa’s most important tourism destinations while Kigali is also in great need of more airlines offering connecting and cheap flights to Kigali. The airline has expressed its plans to launch new flights from the end of this year onwards.
Air Rwanda is moving fast paced on the road to advancements. The airline is also operating its first long-haul route from November 03rd, 2010. Air Rwanda will be using a Boeing B737-500 aircraft on flights between Dubai – Mombasa and Kigali. It will be one of the very few airlines based in Africa, that offer flights to other continents and destinations in UAE. Currently, for flights to UAE, middle east and European airlines are ruling the market where a vast majority prefers flight to Dubai with Emirates Airlines. While, European and other African airlines including South African Airways, KLM, Air France and Kenya Airline also offer codeshare flights to and from Africa.
The schedule for Air Rwanda’s flights to Lusaka is not yet released and there are speculations that the flight might be indirect. It will be more feasible for the airline to offer flights via Johannesburg. Some reports also claim that a Zambian national airline is also given traffic rights as a designated airline. There are chances that both the airlines may commence operations under the bilateral air services agreement.
Air Rwanda as well as Zambian Airline, will be newcomers to the strong African Travel and Tourism market and a bilateral agreement can be a good start for both to stabilize and progress in the industry that gives tough competition to low-cost airlines.
