Skytrax organized the World Airline Awards to honour the hard work and efforts of the airline companies to improve the standard and quality of the airline experience for their passengers. Skytrax World Airline Awards 2013 is the most prestigious and honoured accolades for the airline companies and this time they gathered together the opinions of passengers from more than 160 countries to decide the award winner airlines from many categories. Passengers were asked to answer the questions on the airline passenger satisfaction survey which is also the largest survey in the airline industry to date. The award ceremony was arranged at the Paris Air Show on 18th June 2013.

The World’s Best Airline of the year award was given to Emirates Airline. The runner-up was Qatar Airways and second runner-up airline was Singapore Airline. Along with the World’s Best Airline Emirates also received the award for the best airline in the Middle East and the World’s Best In-flight Entertainment. World’s Most Improved Airline Award was given to Russia’s Transaero Airline. Runner-up for this category of award was Azerbaijan Airlines and the second runner-up was the Norwegian Airline. World’s Best Leisure Airline award was given to Thomson Airways and the runner-up to this award was Air Transat. Best Airline for Cabin Cleanliness Award was given to ANA All Nippon Airways and ANA All Nippon Airways also grabbed the award for the Best Airport Services.

Passenger lounges offered by the airlines are also a very important determinant of their quality and hence this award was included in the list of other accolades as well. Lufthansa won the award for the Best 1st Class Passenger Lounges and Qatar Airways won the award for the Best Business Class Lounges. With respect to the quality of the seats, Etihad Airlines won the award for the Best First Class Seats. Japan Airlines won the Best Business Class Seats. Air New Zealand won the award for the Best Premium Economy Class Seats and Air Asia X won the award for offering the best Low-Cost Airline Premium Class Seats. Best Economy Class Seats Award went to the Garuda Indonesia Airline.

Best Airline in Africa Award was given to the South African Airways for being the best among the other airlines servicing the region. The Best Airline Award for Europe was given to Turkish Airline. The Best Airline in Asia was given to Singapore Airline. The Best Airline in Central Asia/ India was given to the Air Astana. The Best Airline in the Middle East was given to Emirates. Air Canada received the award for being the Best Airline in North America while LAN Airline stood the best in South America.

Low-Cost Airlines are a very important segment of the airline business and service a good portion of the passenger freight. The Best Low-Cost Airline Award in Asia was given to the Air Asia. Jetstar Airways win the Best Low-Cost Airline Award for Australia. Norwegian Airline stood the Best Low-Cost Airline in Europe. IndiGo Airline grabbed the Best Low-Cost Airline Award in Central Asia and the Air Arabia won the Best Low-Cost Airline Award for the Middle East.

This initiative by the Skytrax to survey and give accolades to the best airlines according to several categories is a great step forward as a motivation for the airline companies to improve their service quality for passengers in many areas and departments. Such awards encourage the airlines which work tirelessly to improve the quality of services for their passengers and provide the other airlines with a benchmark to follow to raise their standards too.
