We have all heard of theme parks but a themed airport, aren’t travellers in for a surprise? The Singapore Changi Airport is your portal to the world of magic, wizards and legends. The said airport has collaborated with Warner Bros. on a large-scale project officially announced as A Wizarding World Holiday at Changi Airport in which iconic landscapes from the Harry Potter franchise have been put on display. The exhibit, which started on November 16th 2018, would last till mid-February. However, funfairs and activities are only available till January the 6th, 2019. The entire setup is kept strictly in line with the Harry Potter theme and the same goes for all the activities. From the vast universe of Harry Potter, each airport terminal has adapted a certain world, a set theme and activities relevant to the J. K. Rowling lexicon. Let us explore together:
For starters, the Hogsmeade Village in Terminal 3 is an elaborate conjuring of the particular hamlet and fans will not be disappointed. They have dedicated a big budget to this, and it shows, especially as one passes by Zonko’s Joke Shop or sits to have a cup of tea at Madam Puddifoot’s Tea Shop. Sip your tea away and let the ambience sink in! The Snow and Light Show is the main attraction and what the fandom is eagerly looking forward to. Luckily, this spellbinding demonstration is held regularly and will continue till 6 January. The timings are 6 pm, 7 pm, and 9 pm on weekdays and 1 pm, 6 pm, 7 pm and 9 pm on weekends.
For all the cosplayers out there, this is the chance that you have all been waiting for. The stage is set in the departure hall. Take your pick from a wide variety of costumes at Madam Malkin’s Robes for All Occasions and start a photo shoot. The Diagon Alley is likely to be the most crowded. Learn from veteran sorcerers (say, the correct way of swinging a magical wand) or come up with your own signature spell. The trick is to show up early so that you do not have to wait your turn.
A smart concept brilliantly executed, the Whomping Willow at Terminal 2 captures the essence of the Harry Potter world, characteristic for its dark and murky atmosphere. The artwork is solid and to the point. Similarly, a visit to the Newt Scamander’s Menagerie in Terminal 1 is a must for any Harry Potter fan.
Activities include photography, riding broomsticks, souvenir hunting, participating in games (test your Quidditch skills), meeting people with similar tastes and last, but certainly not the least, eating at the restaurants. Walk away with Harry Potter merchandise – books, Blu-ray disks, action figures and what not. It is a Harry Potter convention people!
Quite an entertaining experience in itself and what is more? It lives up to the original. And as Dumbledore has said it before us,
“it does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.”
