The Airports of Thailand (AoT) Public Company Ltd. has contracted the Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction for initiating expansion of Phuket airport. The expansion contract, worth 5.7 million Thai baht (£115,000) will implement construction work for the next 31 months.
Prospective plans outline various features which will be added to the airport. The first stage involves the construction of an international terminal consisting of a viewing platform, a restaurant along with various services and amenities on the top floor. Immigration will be on the second floor.
The second stage will start with an administration block, a car park for 1500 vehicles and four additional air bridges. Ten docking points for airliners will also be built. Phuket has continuously received an increasing influx of tourists year by year. Plans for an expansion had been wavering since 2008.
The airport has an operative capacity of 6.5 million passengers per year. Passengers in the past year alone numbered 8.4 million, which is likely to increase to 9.3 million by the end of the current year. Upon completion of its expansion, Phuket airport will be able to serve 12.5 million passengers per year.
