Chinese administration’s decision to extend its second largest airport is a clear indicator of the fact that the country is facing an excess of air traffic and commutation over passage of time. Over the past year it was observed that circulation of 45 million passengers took place at the facility, which is estimated to have swelled to 50 million under current records. The airport itself was launched back in 2004 to allow transit of 25 to 35 million passengers at an annual basis.
The pace with which the airport’s attendance has evolved speaks volumes of the fact that the establish trend would need regular revision of the airport’s size and capacity at least once every 5 years. Foreseeing this development, the planned prospective capacity will not only allow a staggering facilitation of 80 million passengers by the year of 2020, but also will escalate the airport’s position among the busiest airports in Asia. Its current standing is only second to Beijing Capital International Airport in China.
With the average sizes of commercial airplanes increasing under the inventories of all major international airline carriers, an additional runway is included in the plan with the width wide enough to accommodate planes with the widest wingspans.
Baiyun Airport’s initial design is practically perfect with a web of terminals fluently functioning to attend to commercial as well as cargo traffic. An air traffic control tower, an overall system upgrade, additional car parking facilities and a new terminal complete with a metro station will conclude the extension.
