Heavy Snow and frosty weather conditions are affecting nearly all airline and all airports around Europe. Where some airports are directly affected and closed to air traffic, other airports are indirectly affected due to disruptions elsewhere in the continent. Many airlines operate connecting flights and flights via other airports, such as Lufthansa operates flights to Johannesburg via Frankfurt and even if Heathrow is open and Frankfurt is not, the flights will be directly affected and the airline may not fly.
Today, airports around the country as well as in Scotland and Ireland are facing flight cancellations, disruptions and delays due to adverse weather conditions.
London Heathrow airport, the only hub airport of UK is operating under restricting conditions and at presently reduced flight schedules are in action. Heathrow is base of many airlines in the UK including British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Arik Airways.
At Gatwick however, the runway is reportedly open and operations are returning to normal while occasional delays and disruptions are likely at both of the airports. Air Zimbabwe operates direct flights to Harare from Gatwick while Air Morocco and Afriqiyah Airways also operate flights from Gatwick.
Another International Airport of high importance, Birmingham International is open but extremely busy while New Castle, Aberdeen, Edinburg, Belfast and Dublin are experiencing delays and disruptions at large.
All travellers are advised to contact their airline or travel agency to get up to date information on flight schedules before leaving and only travel to the airport when the flight is showing as ‘scheduled’ in the live flight information board that can be checked online at airport’s website.
Stansted, Manchester and Glasgow airports are open and the runway is clear as reported earlier today.
