It is known to be one of the largest volcanoes in Africa which is located at the height of approximately 13,255 metres on the upper side of Cameroon’s western shore. It is elevated above the seashore with an equatorial forest that extends towards an exposed apex that is cold, windy and often blanketed with snow. The massive and sheer-sided strata volcano owns the burning magmas of basaltic to the trashy basaltic formation and it dominates the low-lying region of Precambrian aged-stones which are all covered with Cretaceous to Quaternary sediments. Almost 100 mini cinder cones which are crack-controlled can be spotted adjacent to the large focal point of the gigantic volcano that comprises the land area of almost 14,000 square kilometres. These eruptions were first ever discovered by a Carthaginian explorer Hannon the 5th century.
Another heightened park which is known as ‘Etinde’ or ‘Little Mount Cameroon’ lies in the south-western region of this humungous mountain. The significant history of the mountainous range is reflected from this point which has cleaved in northern and southern poles. The cinders and cones feature the arid basalt fields with an old background of lava explosions since 1982. The biggest one took place in 1922 when the lava touched the coastal edge of the Atlantic.
The enthusiastic hikers just love to explore this Mountain, annually in the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope- which acts as a broadcasted foot-race, arranged on the Mount Cameroon from January to February. It starts at Molyko Sports Complex that is located in Buea and extends towards the range of Mount Cameroon. Overall it comprises the length of almost 38 kilometres and the contestants are divided into men and women categories which are further separated by the divisions of casual runners, professionals and youth. The first ever Hope race was organized in 1995 and with the passage of time more and more contestants participate in this enticing and thrilling race. It is visited by approximately 5,000 tourists head towards Cameroon for the interesting marathon.
