Puerto Rico has a very diverse culture; actually, it is a blend of African culture from the slaves who were brought here, Spanish and now a little bit American culture. But the influence of Spanish culture is more prominent in the traditions and culture of Puerto Rico.
On the southern coast of Puerto Rico there is a small uninhabited island known as “Isla de Caja de Muertos” or commonly known as Caja de Muertos. Due to the coffin-like shape of this island, it is also sometimes called the Coffin Island. There is a great story related to the name of this island which says that once a pirate named Jose Almeida fell in love with a lady, he took her away married with her in St. Thomas (Virgin Islands) and kept her with himself pirating around the Caribbean Island, One day the lady got killed by a stray bullet and Jose Almeida placed her body in a glass box inside a coffin made of copper and buried the coffin in an uninhabited island near Ponce and he used to come back to her grave every month and left half of his treasure on her grave although Jose Almeida was caught and executed in 1832. After many years a Spanish engineer the Glass and Copper Coffin. This gave the island its present name “The Coffin Island”
What so ever is the reason of its name this island is a beautiful place to visit.
