Japan is known as the “Land of the rising Sun” and Tokyo is the capital and the largest city of Japan. It is located on the southeastern side of the main island Honshu and also including islands of Izu and Ogasawara. Tokyo is ranked as world’s largest metropolitan economy with a GDP of US $ 1.479 trillion on terms of purchasing power parity. This city is one of the three command centers for the world economy; other two are London and New York City. The city was ranked fourth in the list of Most Live able Cities of the world.
Tokyo has faced many earthquakes in history; disastrous earthquakes struck the city in 1703, 1782, 1812, and 1923 and recently in March 2011. Although the last earthquake had the greatest magnitude but it did not cause as many deaths as that of 1923, because of the Japanese earthquake proof design and technology used in building most of the buildings and architecture, Japan is one of the leading countries in development of science and technology.
Tokyo is a beautiful city with many green parks and open places and the government and authorities have developed many projects to eliminate pollution and environmental issues. Tokyo has taken special measures to reduce emission of greenhouse gases and has introduced japans first emission cap system; this system is expected to reduce the greenhouse gas emission by a total of 25%. Some of the most visited parks in the city include Meiji no Mori Takao Quasi National Park, located around a spectacular mountain Mount Takao, to the south of the Hachioji, Ueno Park is well known for being home to several museums and marvelous statues and art works scattered in the park, some of the notable museums in the park area include National Museum for Western Art, Shitamachi Museum, National Science Museum and Tokyo National Museum. Ogasawara National Park is also a tourist hotspot.
Central location of Tokyo in the area has increased its importance as a major international and domestic rail, road and air transportation hub. Public transportation includes a wide network of environment friendly and efficient rails, buses, subways and trams. Several islands governed by Tokyo have their own airports, many airports serve for most of the international flights to Japan including Narita International Airport and Haneda Airport also serving as a hub for Japan Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines and All Nippon Airways. These airports also serve for domestic, chartered and cargo flights to Tokyo.
