Seoul is one of the largest cities in the world. With a population of more than 10 million it is the capital and the largest city of South Korea, nearly half of the total population of South Korea lives in the Seoul National Capital Area, this mega city is the country’s major political, economic and cultural center. Seoul Special City is the official name of the city and it really is a special place to visit, its history dates back to thousands of years and this city is home to many historic sites some of which have been considered as UNESCO World Heritage Sites including Hwaseong Fortress, Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty and the Jongmyo Shrine.
Seoulis not only a beautiful historic city, the rapid progress and development of this city has ranked this city in the list of top ten global cities in the Global Cities Index for the year 2010, this city is the world’s sixth most economically powerful city. This city is also home to the world’s first IT and multimedia complex known as the Digital Media City, this complex houses several offices, exhibition halls, conference halls and cultural centers related to movies, games, e-learning, IT and software industries. Residents of this complex are known as “Denizens” meaning digital citizens. Construction of a much larger building “Media city Landmark Building” is in progress; this building is expected to be the world’s second-tallest building when completed in 2015.
This city is well decorated with spectacular buildings that are examples of both historical architecture and modern architecture and design along with many other recreational areas and places including more than 100 museums, The National Museum of Korea is the most notable and the largest museum not only in Seoul but in the whole country. National Folk Museum, Ilmin Museum of Art and Seoul Museum of Art are also famous amongst the tourists. Parks are always a good place to visit and this city is home to a lot of magnificent parks including the world’s largest indoor amusement park known as Lotte World, some other parks in the city are Tapgol Park, Seoul Olympic Park and Namsan Park.
Seoul hosts one of the most advanced transportation networks in the world. Public transportation includes a wide network of buses operated by Seoul Metropolitan Government; the city is also well served by one of the busiest subway systems of the world with nearly 8 million passengers per day. Trains also fulfill the transportation needs of the citizens by connecting Seoul to every other city in Korea. Gimpo International Airport and Incheon International airport satisfy the aviation needs of the city and the country as well, providing services to many international airlines Incheon International Airport serves for almost all international flights to South Korea while Gimpo International Airport mainly serves for domestic, Chartered and cargo flights to Seoul.
