Although every nook and corner of South Africa, is worth a visit, Durban is comparatively less frequented destination. It’s a great place, for safari, beach holiday, water excursions, wildlife excursions, historical site explorations or whatever you can possibly plan for a perfect holiday, South Africa has it all. Cape Town is famous for its beach holiday, Johannesburg for its Kruger National Park and Durban, for its Yacht Basin.
Although there is a little that you can find about this place while surfing on the internet, but in true meaning, a visit to the Durban Yacht Basin completed your visit to South Africa.
As far as getting there is concerned, you can get cheap flights to Durban from Johannesburg or domestic flights from Cape Town also fly to Durban. However, if there is a direct flight to Durban from Europe, or UK I have never heard of. All flights go via Cape Town or Johannesburg and it’s actually a better way to start your journey. Stay a couple of days in each city and keep exploring.
Durban Yacht basin is very popular among sailors from around the world, since medieval times. It’s their favourites stopover for any reason. In addition to plenty of scenic views and beautiful landscape, what attracts tourists to Durban Yacht Basin is that being a stopover for ships from around the world, you can get crafts from unlikely ports and around the world destinations.
Another attraction of the Durban Yacht Basin is the two major Yacht clubs located right next to the harbour. The first is the Royal Natal Yacht Club constituted in May 1858. It is where the first Regatta was held in Durban that leads to the establishment of Royal Natal Yacht Club (formerly known as Regatta Club).
This Royal Natal Yacht Club is the oldest Yacht Club in Africa and is the fifth oldest Yacht Club in the Southern Hemisphere.
The second, club that can be of interest to you is the Point Yacht Club. It was formed in Durban on 14 May 1892, and at the time was composed mainly of Point residents, that lead to its name as “Point Yacht Club “.
The Point Yacht Club also hosts World Championship events offshore, and is renowned for its superb sailing waters and organizing ability. It caters for youth, dinghy, and keelboat sailing and also hosts to many international visiting yachts and their crews, who use Durban as an ideal place to replenish supplies and take advantage of the excellent repair and slipping facilities
For tourists, a picturesque view of the harbour, a fresh and tasty meal and a lot to know about the world of sailors – are the primary attraction of the Durban Yacht Basin.
