Ah, Christmas. The great Andy Williams once called it “the most wonderful time of the year,” and who am I to argue? There’s nothing quite like spending the day with your family and leaving your living room in a sea of torn up wrapping paper and bits of cardboard (as long as you don’t make me clean it up!). Let’s face it though, Christmas without snow is like a garden without flowers, or worse yet, tea without milk!
Fortunately, there are several fantastic hotspots (or should that be coldspots?) where snowflakes are more likely to fall.
Reykjavik, Iceland
Could there be a more appropriate destination for this list than one which contains “ice” in the name? Temperatures in Reykjavik during this month usually hover around 0°C, and snowfall is common during the winter months. There are lots of things to see and do in Reykjavik. Maybe you want to visit the National Museum of Iceland, or the various churches across the city. Perhaps even a trip to the Harpa Concert Hall to indulge in some Opera? And when that’s all said and done, you can dip into one of the many hot springs littered throughout the country to keep yourself warm!
Tromsø, Norway
Another European destination with guaranteed snow lies in the north of Norway, in the famous city of Tromsø. This enchanting destination is home to the world-renowned Northern Lights, and winter offers one of the prime opportunities to witness their ethereal glow. If you find yourself in Tromsø, experiencing this breathtaking phenomenon is simply a must! Before nightfall hits, however, you’d do well to just simply walk through the town centre, or maybe challenge yourself to complete one of the many hiking trails located around the city. Tromsø is celebrated for its thriving seafood industry, making it a haven for salmon connoisseurs and culinary enthusiasts alike.
Colorado, USA
There’s a reason why Colorado is regarded as the skiing capital of the USA. And if you didn’t get it by now, that reason is snow! Keystone, Colorado boasts thousands of acres of pristine slopes just waiting to be explored, so you’ll likely find yourself tempted to book an extended stay to experience it all! But if skiing is not your thrill-seeking winter sport of choice, how about some ice skating, instead? Sleigh riding, perhaps? Or are you brave enough to try your hand at sledding? Sapporo, Japan
You might not have expected to have found Japan on this list, but the northern city of Sapporo sees it fair share of snow during winter, so not only do you bask in the enchanting splendour of a white Christmas, but you also get to spend time in one of the world’s most captivating countries, brimming with endless charm. Fast food vending machines, anyone? Sapporo is home to one of Japan’s most famous entertainment districts, Susukino, as well as historical sites such as the Hokkaido Jingu shrine. And if it’s a bit of natural beauty you’re after, then you can always take a cable car to the top of Mt. Moiwa and gaze down over the whole city!
