Nairobi National Park is the most significant and notable park of Kenya that was established in 1946. It is situated in the southern heart of Nairobi at some 7 kilometres away and the wild animals are kept away from the metropolis with just a thin fence. If you hit the lower slopes, you will find the lands covered with Cypress, Cynodon, Digitaria, and Themeda. For those who are in search of a thrill and adventure, the park possesses a number of gorges and deep valleys, which provide shelter to the breeds of Rhus natalensis, Newtonia, Aspilia mossambicensis, Elaeodendron buchananii, Ficus eriocarpa, Canthium schimperiana, and Apodytes dimidiata.
The predators and herbivores like zebra and wildebeest migrate towards the Athi-Kapiti plains, by entering from the region of Kitengela which is the well-known conservational area. When the rainy season is at its peak, they are found scattered and strolling over the plains and come back as soon as the dry season starts, when the largest variety of the wild animals can be spotted. There are various small dams that are built on the edge of Mbagathi River and they act as a source of great temptation for many herbivores that survive by drinking water.
Apart from it the park also houses approximately 500 breeds of unique and colourful birds including both permanent and migratory ones. A sanctuary is situated very adjacent to the park that acts as the secure home of sick and orphaned elephants and rhinoceros and due to this the park is occasionally known as Kifaru Ark which means ‘Rhinoceros Sanctuary’ that the most recognized and successful sanctuary of Kenya providing you plenty of opportunities for observing the life and activities of black rhinoceros in their actual habitat.
The best time for excellent game-observation and migration is from June to August.
