Montreal is the second largest city in Canada. The city was originally called Ville-Marie meaning “The City of Mary” but later the city gained its new name after a hill with three peaks named Mont-Royal, this hill is located in the centre of the city. This city is titled as the “Cultural Capital of Canada” by a magazine and is recently named UNESCO City of Design. Today Montreal is an important centre of culture, design, technology, finance and commerce.
Montreal has the second largest economy of all cities in Canada and is on top in Quebec. Some of the main industries of this city include pharmaceuticals, aerospace, electronics, telecommunications, tobacco and textile industry. Port of Montreal is the largest inland port in the world and the second busiest port in Canada. Located on the Saint Lawrence River this port is also the gateway to many other major cities as Cleveland, Toronto and Detroit. Montreal is also the railway hub of Canada and is home to the headquarters of the Canadian National Railway. Also, cheap flights to Montreal are easily available from around world destinations.
Montreal is also well known for film and television productions, the city is home to many studios, headquarter of Alliance Films and National Film Board of Canada. Being a beautiful city with many scenic views this city is a trendy filming spot. Montreal also hosts many Musical, Film and Cultural festivals.
Two major airports serve this great city, Montreal-Pierre Elliot Trudeau International Airport commonly known as Dorval airport serves only for passenger flights welcoming most of the flights to Canada from all over the world and also caters for many international flights from Montreal to other destinations in the world. This airport also serves as headquarter for Air Transat and Air Canada. The second airport serving this city is the Montreal-Mirabel International Airport this airport mainly serves for cargo flights along with some passenger flights and general aviation. Dorval airport is the third busiest airport in Canada.
The city’s Unique and one of its kind festivals is the “Just For Laughs” festival. It is a comedy festival and is held in July each year. This festival includes both verbal and non-verbal acts and people from every corner of the world come to Montreal to enjoy this festival and have a lot of entertainment. Some of the famous festivals in the city are Montreal World Film festival, Montreal International Jazz Festival and the Montreal Fireworks festival.
