The last decade has seen quite a lot of changes in the world tourism industry, and the natural disasters have played a great part in transforming the tourism trends worldwide. Like the 2004 tsunami that struck the East Asian shores and nearly wiped out many of its famous tourist destinations. One of these affected islands was the Ko Phi Phi Don Island of Thailand, which with its white sandy beaches, turquoise water and world-class tourist facilities made a name for itself in the early years of the new millennia. The tsunami that struck the whole region on the 24th of December, 2004 destroyed most of the island. The magnitude of the disaster was massive and its effects were devastating for the island as most of the major resorts and hotels of the island were washed away by the mighty waves of the Andaman Sea. But if you visit the island now, it will be hard to believe that such a calamity ever occurred to this gorgeous island.
Today Ko Phi Phi Don has been fully returned to its former glory and its luxurious hotels and bungalows are booked for the most part of the year. The pace of redevelopment in the island was astonishing and this has helped in attracting thousands of tourists from all around the world. This unbelievably beautiful paradise of an island was always a preferred choice for the backpackers who were not really interested in the high priced bungalows of Phi Phi but its dense tropical jungle that provide a great place to set camp and enjoy the natural goodness of the island. The island is one of the remotest of the country and is only accessible by boats. Most tourists prefer to take a cheap flight to Bangkok and then fly domestically to Krabi, the provincial capital and take a boat to the Ko Phi Phi Don Island.
Although the main town of the island looks pretty much the same as it used to be before the tsunami but things have definitely changed like the prices for accommodation are much more sensible as oppose to the shockingly high prices of the past. Most of the resorts are on the beach and provide quite decent facilities. Phi Phi has some of the best beaches of Thailand and they are usually flocked by the tourist that are there to take in the rays of the sun for a complete body tan or for swimming and snorkelling in its clear coastal waters.
