Go back in time to the 1800’s and you are about to enter into a town of the old west with a large dirt road through the center of the entire town, saloons, watering holes, barbers and another assortment of shops line this dirt road and people ride in on horses and horse driven carts. These gun slinging, hats and boots adorned people carry with them different tools and utensils to test their prospects and search for gold. The mad rush and frenzy begins as they quickly dismount to start digging and sifting through the riverbed to try and find a fleck of gold to claim as their own.
This scene is not something of the past anymore, even today the Old Sacramento State Historic Park has been restored and preserved right down to the minutest details to as it was during the 1800s. The buildings are now shown pieces and living museums. Every Labor Day weekend you can even watch the reenactment of the Gold Rush Days. Volunteers and actors will dress up in their finest old western outfits and the paved streets get covered with tons of dirt and all automobile traffic is completely barred from the area and you get to watch the mid and late 1800’s come to life and see how people react to the news of Gold. Join in on this historic adventure and become a live audience in this reproduction of a famous chapter in history. Other than the Labor Day weekend reenactments you can also find many different attractions that are open all year around. There different museums such as the Sacramento History Museum, Old Sacramento Interpretive Center, California State Railroad Museum, California State Military Museum and the Wells Fargo History Museum. Horse drawn carriage rides are also a daily phenomenon here and you can even take a ride on a historic riverboat or a steam powered train from the Central Pacific Railroad. You will also come across a resurrected sternwheel riverboat which is called the ‘Delta King’ which is moored along the river and serves the purpose of a hotel, theatre and restaurant.
You can further brush up on your history by visiting the many memorials of the founders of Old Sacramento and of the California transcontinental railroads and of other transport systems. Some notable memorials are the Theodore Judah monument and also the Pony Express Statue. You can even visit the Sacramento Valley rail station which is just a stroll away.
