Some of the rarest highlights include the Rainbow Lorikeet which is actually a small and very brightly colored Australian parrot. It is only 14 inches long and has distinctive rainbow colors like green, blue, orange, red and yellow feathers and a red bill. It has a brush-tipped tongue and a very shrill call but it chatters while eating. It is mainly found in woodlands, rainforests, heath, open forests, mangrove forests, and other orchards and parks in Australia. Here at the aviary you can feed it apples or seeds by hand and if you hold them up and stand still enough they may even come and sit on your shoulders.
Another one of their main attractions is the rare Australian Finch. They come in a plumage of black and white spots with a brown back and their famous red beak. They tend to live in bushes and gather mostly around watering holes. Another rare treat is the Indian ring-necked parakeet which is imported mainly from Pakistan. The predators birds like brown falcons, peregrine falcons and the whistling kites are kept separate so that they do not disturb the other birds. Some of the other local endangered species of parrots present include the Princess Parrots from Central Australia, Baudin’s and Carnaby’s cockatoos from Western Australia, Orange-Bellied parrots from Southeastern Australia, Multi-colored parrots from New South Whales and the famous Golden-Shouldered parrots of Queensland.
