With Halloween just around the corner, get ready for some spooky fun in Auckland this October. All year around however, Auckland offers a “Ghost Tour” which is a two hour walk session which you can take with or without the help of a guide. You get the chance to walk through the lantern lit cobbled streets of old Auckland and see some of the spookiest sights that Auckland has to offer. The Ghost Tours take you out to see the dark side of Auckland; the tours start around 8:00pm and depart daily from the front entrance of the Britomart Train Station in lower Queen Street. A ghost walker appears wearing a cloak and holding out a lantern who leads you on to some of the most historic streets of Auckland. The tour starts with some chilling tales of the public hangings in Queen Street following the tour of the abandoned cinema whose manager committed suicide and whose spirit still haunts the building. Next up is the historic site of the 1918 influenza pandemic which left thousands dead in Auckland. Then the tour moves on to Vulcan Lane which was once nicknamed ‘vultures’ lane due to its grim past and you will be told about all the murders planned there. Then the tour stops for a break by the Auckland hotel which is also currently uninhabited due to the gory suitcase murder.
Moving on after a short break the tour goes through a gallery with graphic imagery of the fear of the Bubonic plague outbreak in Auckland. The next part is filled with a collection newspaper clippings with pictures as well of the many beheadings and cannibalism cases in Auckland. And the final part of the gallery depicts a burnt down Auckland and stories of why the great fire almost destroyed Auckland city. The last stop on the tour is Auckland cemetery where we get to see where the dead of Auckland are buried. Throughout the tour we will get to learn authentic stories of the bizarre and macabre while seeing the most historically haunted streets of Auckland.
Auckland is known to generate some of the best ghost stories and other than the Ghost Tours they also have many other haunted locations for you to visit such as;
Totara Park: The Totara Park has some very twisted and harrowing tales which are told to only those who seek to hear them. And some parts of the forest have special camp sites which are on special haunted ground.
Ghosts at Fletcher Bay: At the end of the Coromandel peninsula it is rumored that several bodies were dumped on the site and their spirits roam trying to find their captors for revenge.
Lion Rock Piha: This location has been a known spot of several suicides and drowning incidents in night hence, it is said that the spirits roam with piercing eyes and slide up and down the side of the lion rock. Many ghost sightings have been reported and tons of people come so try and watch the ghostly reenactment of the jumps off lion rock.
Spooky House in Orakei: This old abandoned house has raised many controversies and most people are too scared to go inside. The drop of temperature as you step in to the house at freezing point is enough to scare away most people but a lot adventure seekers camp out here in hopes to catching some ghostly sightings.
