An ode to French colonialism, Battambang is a magnificent city that is situated in the heart of Cambodia and was the biggest rice producing region of the country. There are plenty of examples of French Colonial era that highly grabs the attention of thousands of people and force them to take cheap flights to Cambodia. The biggest attraction of this 100,000 person town is its simple and amazing rural life that is a mere stone’s throw away and you will love to explore its sites on boat, jeep and motorcycle. It also acts as a gateway between Phnom Penh and Thailand, so you can also easily access the popular temples of Wat Ek Phnom and Phnom Banon. It is known to be the 2nd largest city of Cambodia which is located on a distance of about 293 kilometres from Phnom Penh, in the centre of ‘rice bowl’.
There are a number of adventurous and exciting activities that you can do here like the ride on a bamboo train, these trains are commonly called as “norry” and id made up of a an engine, bamboo decking, wooden frame and the wheels that are taken from the wartime tank. These trains chug up and down on a railway track that lies between the outskirts of Phnom Penh and Battambang. There are many hotels that arrange such adventure of Bamboo trains and you can also arrange it with the help of tuk-tuk and motorbike taxi driver.
Another option for magical sightseeing of the region is by sitting on motorbike taxi’s back that offers you an adventurous excursion while Puttering on the side of the roads and the wind gently touches your face once you are observing the beautiful and lush green farms, streams and villages. You can also opt to stop at some of the most tempting areas like Wat Sampeau that is perched on the peak of a hill- approximately 18 kilometres away in the outer suburbs of the town. Another must-see site is of Wat Banan which is also commonly called as “Mini-Angkor Wat” and has 359 steps to reach high up.
About 2 kilometres away in the southern part of the town, there lies the cultural village of Watkor that owns a number of wooden houses that were constructed some 100 years ago. Besides, on the same road that head towards the southern region also houses a notable 6.5 metre high monument that was built in 2007 by 4 Cambodian artists. It is named as the Naga for peace and Development monument and aims at destroying all those weapons that were surrendered by the residents.
Other thrilling and interesting activities are the Cooking courses for which the the Smokin’ Pot restaurant is very popular and provides easy learning for cooking cultural Khmer food and the Circus show, located in the Anh Chanh village where approximately a00 students can enjoy free adventures.
