Ankara is the capital of Turkey. It is the second largest city in the nation after Istanbul; it is the centre of major political, economic and cultural activities in the country and is an important commercial and industrial city. Ankara is a very old city and was well known for the production of Mohair (a special type of wool collected from animals) from the Angora goats and Angora Rabbits. Fabrics made of mohair have been a major export of this city for hundreds of years. Pears and Grapes are two of the most popular agricultural products of this city. Today this city has a repute for the wine production from these Muscat grapes.
Ankara is a famous tourist destination with a wide variety of attractions for every one; the city is home to several museums including Museum of Anatolian civilizations, State Art and Culture Museum, TCDD Open Air Steam locomotive Museum, War of Independence Museum, Ankara Aviation Museum, Ankara Ethnography Museum and METU Science and Technology Museum. The city is also rich in historical and archaeological sites, theatres, mosques, parks and shopping centres and market places etc. Ankara is home to some of the best hotels and restaurants in the world satisfying the accommodation, food and drinking needs of the tourists from every corner of the world.
There are several archaeological sites in the city that are the main source of attraction for many of the tourists visiting this marvellous city one of the main archaeological sites is the Ankara Citadel. The foundation of this castle was laid by the Galatians but was completed by the Romans. The castle was further restored and the Seljuqs and Byzantines made many additions to it. Ankara Citadel and the surrounding areas are considered to be the oldest part of Ankara reflecting the finest examples of traditional architecture and designs. Many houses and buildings in the Citadel area have been restored and now some of these traditional houses serve as restaurants serving local and traditional cuisine.
The Esenboga international Airport serves Ankara. Satisfying aviation needs of the city by providing services to many international and domestic airlines having cheap flights to Ankara. This airport also serves as a hub for the national airlines. A wide network of buses, trains and tramways including a new Yuksek hizli Tren high-speed rail and Ankara Metro accomplish the public transportation needs. These buses and trains not only have routes within the city but also connect the city with the rest of the state, and are also a much cheaper and economical mode of public transportation.
