Lome is the largest and a great metropolis of Togo which is situated on the Gulf of Guinea. The place acts as the chief
and significant port for the trade of palm, copra, cocoa, and coffee and is also very well-known for the oil-refinery. With every passing day the place is gaining fame and many tourists take cheap flights to Lome to visit some of its most alluring spots.
Lome was founded by the Ewe people in the 18th century and it bustled with a large number of populations in the 20th century. Now it acts as the focal point of various trade goods which are supplied to the neighbouring countries of Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali and Ghana As it is flourishing day by day, there is an increment in the number of tourists each year with the majority coming from France. The city features many fascinating tourist spots like its tallest building which is Hotel Corinthia, having the elevation of about 102 metres and owns 36 floors.
Lome Grand Market is the significant landmark of the city which is located in close vicinity of Lomé Cathedral and is often crowded by the groups of people who flock here for the live African music. This market is also called “Grande Marche” which means ‘Big Market’ and comprises of three storeys occupying the whole block of Lome city. The unique feature of the market is that the majority of its sellers are females. The market has everything ranging from dried fish, green lemons, and red peppers to travel bags, combs and medicines.
The first floor owns the Nana Benz which is very much famous for clothing. Besides, there lies the fetish market, Togo National Museum( that contains the traditional and artistic exhibits of weapons, pottery, dolls, musical instruments and jewellery), Lomé Cathedral, the wharf and some pristine beaches. The city is undoubtedly the blend of African traditions, influences and styles and the landscapes are full of colourful houses, green gardens, gigantic squares, spacious boulevards and red earth.
The place has many remains of colonial architectures like galleries and arcades and the German-Gothic designed and Sacred-Heart styled Cathedral. Apart from it the city is lined with various modern buildings such as the splendid ECOWAS edifice, the BCEAO headquarters, the BTCI, the Hotel Mercure Sarakawa, Hotel de la Paix and Palm Beach Hotel. The centre of the city houses the Akodessewa market, which is distinctive from the other market and possesses the gris-gris, gongons and fetishes.
The climate of the city is equatorial with two separate rainy seasons, first one lasting from April till July and the other one spanning the months of September till the end of November. The weather is highly affected due to its location along the ocean and it remains pleasant and moderate with stable heat throughout the year. The cool breezes blowing from the seaside makes the city an ideal location to visit during any time of the year. So get ready and pack up your belongings and cameras for having an exciting trip towards the magnificent city of Lome.
