Banjul which was formerly known as Bathurst, is a magnificent metropolis of Gambia and is located on St’ Mary’s Island, the point where River Gambia flows into the Atlantic Ocean which is linked to the land area with the help of bridges in the southern side and passenger ferries and vehicles in the northern side. The city was leased in 1651 by Duchy of Courland and Semigallia and later on in 1816; the place earned a lot fame and importance as a notable trading post, among the British. Another antediluvian feature of the city is its Albert Market with its history, dating back to the 19th century and is situated on the Liberation Avenue. Besides, Banjul also serves as the home of some cathedrals and various mosques, which are spread throughout the city.
The most exciting and thrilling event of the City is its Plymouth- Banjul Challenge also called as Ultimate Banger Challenge, is a charity car-rally event which is held annually. It was organized in 2003 for the very first time and follows a large route, passing through many regions like Senegal, Mauritania, Western Sahara, Morocco and touching its finish-line in the Gambia. Those who participate from Europe are allowed to enter from Tarifa (Sothern Spain).
The criteria are that the worth of the participating car should not be less than 100 pounds and they should be well-maintained as they have to cope many obstacles throughout the course and also and also through the desert area.
