Visiting the Land of the Thousand Hills – Rwanda

The title of “The Land of Thousand Hills” was bestowed upon Rwanda by the Belgian explorers that were the first Europeans to get into the country. And they were right in saying so, Rwanda is a country with seemingly endless mountains, gorgeous scenery and some unique wildlife. Rwanda always was a great attraction for the tourists coming to Africa so it has a good tourism infrastructure. But during the ethnic civil conflict in the 90’s most of the infrastructure was destroyed or damaged. But with the peace finally returning to the land, it is again booming as a favourite travel destination of Africa. Flights to Rwanda are available with many airlines of the world.

The beautiful city of Kigali with its lively nightlife is the capital and also the cultural and social hub of the country. Some horrific things did happen in Rwanda back in 1994 during the Rwandan genocide, but it is a distant past now. You will not find many people talking about it, Rwandans are moving on with their lives, with forgive and forget a passion. It is not more evident in any other place of Rwanda then the capital Kigali itself. But if you are interested in knowing what happened during those menacing years of civil war, then head to the Kigali Memorial Centre. For enjoying the famous nightlife of Kigali, you can settle to a garden bar of the city where beer is cheap and nightclubs are close by.

To see by your self why Rwanda was called the land of the hills, pay a visit to Parc National Des Volcans considered as one of the most beautiful places in Africa. The park consists of a chain of seven volcanoes that from the natural border of the country with the neighbouring Congo and Uganda and is the best place to see and observe the rare mountain Gorillas. Although these Gorillas are also living in the neighbouring border areas of Uganda and Congo, in Uganda, they are not in such large numbers and in Congo there is always a potential threat from the rebels.
