Trying to pass the time during a long flight in economy class can turn out to be a very problematic affair. Many passengers, first timers especially, consider flying a very entertaining experience, highlighted by attendants bringing in delicious meals and the camera showing the beautiful view beneath the plane. Unfortunately, that is not how it always goes, notably during long journeys. Lengthy flights can turn out to be very bothersome, especially in economy class, where passengers do not have enough room to stretch their legs and find it hard to go to sleep. This article lists some of the things that should make the experience of a long journey in the economy class more comfortable and enjoyable.
First of all, travellers should store their entire carry-on luggage on the overhead space. Space in an economy class seat is very limited and having luggage stacked around the legs or in the lap does not allow the passengers to sit comfortably or take a nap. All the essentials like passport/visa, wallets and other documents should be stacked in the rack in front of the seat. This wipes out the chance of losing these important possessions. All the bags should be stowed overhead or under the seat to maximize the leg space.
Passengers should take their time with the in-flight meals. Most of the airlines around the world provide two meals for twelve hour long flights. This can lead to hunger for the passengers during the time between the meals and towards the end of the journey. Eating with breaks and taking a long time to finish the food can reduce the longing for food and can also help pass the time.
Bringing a portable DVD player or a laptop can be of great help. Long trips can turn out to be a perfect opportunity for passengers to catch some of the movies in their ‘must-see’ lists. A fully charged laptop/DVD player can get around five or six hours of playing time and this can be deemed enough to enjoy two movies. Some airlines also provide economy class seats with a socket so that electronic devices can be charged along the go. For television show enthusiasts, a ten-hour journey or more is a long enough time to go through a season of any of the popular shows around like Breaking Bad, Suits, and Game of Thrones etc.
For people who cannot find the time to read a novel from their ‘must-read’ list, a long journey can be the perfect opportunity. Magazines, newspapers and journals can also come in handy when the time is going by slow. Crossword, puzzles, Sudoku and other paper games are also convenient ways to get through the time. Some airlines have planes with come with an attached snack bar. Going over to the bar to buy eatables like crisps, biscuits, shakes and non-alcoholic beverages can also be an entertainment in itself.
