Perhaps not wrong in assuming for myself the metaphorical role of that bee which, once having discovered a cluster of nectar bearing flowers, signals the rest of the colony of its whereabouts. When the hive is full of insomniac gals and party-fixated papi chulos, I’ll follow it up to land myself at a bombastic night club in Europe. What to think of are the options among which a ‘bee’ may land upon in this case when in the star-studded continent of active nightlife:
Elrow, Barcelona
There are plenty of clubs here indeed, but those regular clubs, with all their graphic interiors and eloquent services, seldom show the ability to give a touch of that intimacy which distils a new life in drained souls. It is in this genre that Elrow excels. These photos are taken from life and are not intended to exceed it.
Gulping down draughts when the night is half or two thirds over or so, the experience is more pleasurable than the tranquilizing weightlessness of space. Add fireworks and confetti; fun begets fun and the toast begins anew… so no need to keep it low key. Party animals must book cheap flights to Spain, spend themselves and fade back to sobriety for the coming Monday.
Berghain Panorama Bar, Berlin
It is rightly thought, said and believed that in lightening their spirits, Europeans lighten their tasks, their chores. That job of yours is indisputably bent on squeezing everything out of you and that left over cavity of apathy and barrenness can perhaps only be replenished by a nocturnal escapade.
If you’ve been appropriating a specific portion of your credit for such diversions as clubbing, especially where the DJs make it a matter of honour to present the best selection of music, Berghain Panorama Bar is the spot to hit in those wee hours of nightfall. No phones allowed in here though, but that only adds to the exclusiveness of the exploit.
Yoyo, Paris
As you enter into the club and find yourself below a large terrace – a layout standing midway between the indigenous French art and the modern global trend- you cannot help but compliment such a place with a chilled drink. Paris is abuzz with Yoyo club and there’s a good reason as to why folks yield to it. Of the multitudes that crowd upon the showground, there is no club more instinct with life than this.
The music ranges from techno to electro, with a variety of deep house thrown in the mix as well. Combining lightning and visuals, there is a multi-dimensional cinema for adding glint and sheen to every club party being held in the premises.
Lux, Lisbon
A comparatively large club mostly frequented by people of posh stock, whose interest in a laid-back Saturday night watching football is subordinate to the cravings of a hardcore party. In no city other than Lisbon have I seen such an elaborate arrangement in a club- a centre overlooking the porch, a centre of most excellent workmanship.
The space around it is smoothed with wooden dance floors, excellently done, and the interior likewise embellished with lights, stuffed polar bears and a gay-friendly atmosphere. Colour goes through a dazzling transformation here; the crimson hue blending with the fuchsia characterizes the typical disco pattern.
Elongated angular shadows highlight every wall, and as the light curves higher, the shadows shrink further- so much so that the entire club becomes a living organism. That, coupled with the soothing deception of perspective resulting from the booze, as soon as it kicks in, gives you the raptures you call for.
Big Bang, Rome
The oxymoronic character of Big Bang, it’s terribly good air and its icy hot beer, rightfully serves it the status of being the nucleus of underground Roman nightlife. Friday nights, in particular, see Big Bang metamorphosing into the Big Bang Reggae Yard.
Fans interested in the coolest reggae party in Italy may get prompted to book flights to Rome and be present at the night scene called BaBaBoom Time. With the interior resembling that of a house- one main lounge and several other compartments for a bit more privacy- it’s like an at-home celebration.
20/44, Belgrade
Rock n Roll in 20/44. Besides having a striking construction, is a hub for libertine spirits from all across Europe. Perhaps you don’t understand the concept of blowing your money? Well it’s about immediate gratification; a guilty pleasure in extreme metempsychosis.
Make hell of a noise while you dance and bash on this boat. No one minds. Steal a moment and glance straight up at the illuminated Branko’s bridge, you’ll love it. PG 18 applicable at this one, though!
Egg, London
Save the talk of the past and hurry on with the draughts before you lose any more steam. EGG is a budget pack prescribed for those who’re looking for a club that’s cheap but altogether state-of-the-art. Inexpensive door price, signature drinks, spacious rooms, underground Djs and quality line-ups.
While under the same roof the homogeneity of the company is hardly discernable, the only difference lies in the difference of the visitors’ endurance on the dance floor. Crammed into the not-so-free confines of the club and still having a feeling of freedom is something unique to the EGG.
Air, Amsterdam
“Heard melodies are sweet but those unheard are sweeter.” –Keats
The quote truly answers the exotic character given of the ambience here. Certainly, we are coded for pleasure and good cheer. But the overall fun reaches new amplitudes chiefly when the club experience is interactive, cross-cultural and yet intimate and casual. The showdown at Amsterdam, just off the Rembrandt square, is a must for all pleasure mongers. As for university students: Just don’t get too carried away! That F on your grade book wouldn’t stand for fantastic.
