Nong Khiaw is a market town that lies on the western side of Nam Ou in northern Luang Prabang and is encircled with caves and mountains from all the sides. Climbing a bamboo ladder to reach the limestone interior and a walk through the paddy fields is truly an unforgettable experience.
Pak Ou Caves is another famous name that provides you with plenty of thrilling and adventurous opportunities. These were actually used for the worshiping of the River Spirit and are visited by a large number of people for centuries. These caves are approachable with the help of a boat and are located some 25 kilometre away in the downstream. Some of the enthusiastic and bravest travelers take a trip with jumbo (an open air taxi). You will ne enthralled and amazed to see the stunning and breath-taking vistas of the Mekong’s chocolate colored streams. The erected Buddha images (whose history date back to more than 60 decades) and the striking limestone cliffs will not disappoint you.
If you travel about 35 minutes in the southern part of this region, you will hit the magical and awe-inspiring site of Tad Sae Waterfall that is located on the junction of Huay Sae and Nam Khan rivers. There are various multilevel limestone formations, cascading into a large number of pools. Also don’t miss the opportunity to visit another charming and fascinating spot of this town that lies across the river and is known as Wat Long Khoun. It is accessible with boat and is truly worth watching, although not very much spectacular and magnificent as compared to other temples but its charisma has something unique and distinguished that bewitches a large number of crowds.
