October 15, 2010, Nigeria suffers a fall in tourism and the only ongoing travelling is primarily based on student and immigrant travellers to and from Nigeria. Although, with the county’s fastest growing airline “Arik Air” travelling to the country through cheap flights to Nigeria has become safer, convenient and cheaper, however, there are still but hardly any tourism promotions recently.
In this time of imminent need for tourism development in Nigeria, Abuja Carnival seems the only ray of hope. Dating back to 2005, when the first edition of the Abuja Carnival was held, it earned a reputation for being an exciting family event that managed to attract world media attention. The festival is famed for the dazzling displays of Nigerian culture, traditions and performances. Although it has intrigued the debate whether or not the Nigerians have ever been so passionate about their culture before one thing can be guaranteed, Abuja Carnival is an eye-catcher. It is acting as a tool and means to rejuvenate and revives Nigerian culture in its truest essence.
Discussions are increasing and Abuja Carnival is a hot issue in Abuja residents and people across the country are expressing their passion for its yearly unique sights, colours and sounds. Although there have been a few other festivals during the course, Abuja carnival is the only one to gain so much international attention and foreign interest. It is indeed likely, that the festival will prove as a means to increase and develop a stronger economy in Nigeria supported by tourism as Arik Air the growing airline of the country is playing a role in.
