One historical gem of Adelaide is the Medina Grand Treasury. This magnificent hotel gives off the impression of entering a high society complex with its austere white walls and railings at the top. The Garden pathways are lighted by little lanterns and always circle around beautiful marble fountains. As the name suggests this was once the Treasury building and was built in 1839. The late Gregorian styled architecture has been restored and it still houses its original ornate staircases, long wide corridors and cast iron columns.
One can still easily picture the clerks rushing down these wide corridors, heads full of financial business. The foyer however now contains an eclectic collection of modern touches which light up walls. The sense of history is empowering and if you ask for a tour you will even get a chance to explore the old magnificent cabinet rooms and even the mysterious underground tunnels which are worth investigating.
The best part is the location as it is right in the heart of Adelaide and adjacent to the famous Town Hall. It is right in the epicenter of this grid-planned city as it is adjoining the well-lit Victoria Square. This makes for only a short walk north to the shops of the North Terrace arts area, taking a southward walk however will take you right to the exclusive Gouger Street cafés and restaurants. The hotel contains over 80 one and two bedroom apartments. The studio rooms give off a very sleek look and are not overtly stylish. The majority of the apartments come with fully equipped kitchens so as to allow self-catering and if you wish you can even get your groceries delivered to your room.
The Medina Grand Treasury’s restaurant and bar both are located around their central courtyard and allow for outdoor seating where you can get a good view of their beautiful fountain. The servings are good and presentation and service always gets your attention and the wine list is exquisite. Enjoy a quiet dinner under the stars admiring the outlook and façade of the hotel building and manicured gardens and the fountain with lights that make the water sparkle like crystals right here in Adelaide’s Medina grand Treasury Hotel.
