It is the most famous tourist spot in the country and the reason are its long sandy beaches and vast desert that provides an excellent opportunity for adventure to the surfers, anglers and beach lovers from all around the world. Swakopmund is especially a favourite of the South African tourists who have made it their permanent summer vacation destination. Swakopmund does not have its own international airport so you will have to take a cheap flight to Windhoek the capital of Namibia and then you can make the rest of the journey by taking the overnight train to Swakopmund or make the journey by hiring a car from the city. Swakopmund is a resort town and you will find plenty of world-class hotels and resorts in the city especially along its gorgeous beaches.
The town was established in 1892 as the major harbour of the German Namibia, the German colonial authorities choose Swakopmund because of the availability of fresh water here. Today although the town still has quite a large harbour the real source of income in Swakopmund is its tourism industry.
To take the best view of the town and adjacent desert head on the balloon safari, this can either be arranged through a tour operator or you can ask your resort to do it for you. The balloons will provide you with a memorable bird eye view of the town, the long beach and the vast desert that stretches for miles. The beaches of Swakopmund are thought be some of the best in the continent, they are soft, white and seem endless with the naked eye.
You can easily find some deserted places along these long beaches for getting a complete body tan. The lukewarm waters along the beach are perfect for swimming and snorkelling.
