Malawi is the warm heart of Africa and if you are new to the continent then it’s the perfect place for you to start exploring it. With its magnificent and attractive scenery and super friendly locals, the greatest advantage Malawi has is the ease with which you can get there. With more and more resorts and hotels operating in the country, it is fast becoming a favorite destination in Africa. There are not many direct flights available from Europe to Lilongwe the capital of the country, but decent airlines like KLM, South African Airways and Kenyan Airlines offer flights to Lilongwe through their respective capitals.

Malawi’s biggest attraction is “the lake of stars” a stunning reservoir of crystal water stretching some 500km along Malawi’s eastern border, separating it from the wild and mountainous coast of Mozambique and Tanzania. Small isolated villages sprinkled on the northern lake shore and the beautiful Liwonde National Park situated at its southern tip.
You will find 500 fish and other species that inhabit the lake. The freshwater diving and snorkeling here are excellent and you will surely find yourself indulged in it. Malawi’s not just for water lovers and warm sun worshipers though; there are plenty of activities here to keep you excited and Malawi’s landscape is surprisingly diverse. You can go for the misty heights of Mount Mulanje or visit the Nyika National Park, where you’ll find some of the best places for hiking; stunning peaks and endless rolling grassland form some of the most enjoyable hiking routes in the whole of Africa.
Most of the travellers only stay for a couple of days in the country and then race to Africa’s ‘bigger’ attractions. But if you can spend more time here Malawi has much to offer. So book yourself a nice cheap flight to Malawi and take time to wander in the highland wilderness, dive and swim in the lake’s warm waters, or simply soak up the vibrant local flavor and you’re sure to find yourself satisfied with this experience.
