Following the example of its neighbours, Zambia is also improving its tourism infrastructure and marketing its national parks to attract tourists towards it from all over the world. The Lower Zambezi national park of Zambia was the first one to catch the attention of the safari lovers but recently the real gem that has grasped the imagination of tourists is the gorgeous South Luangwa National Park.
This magnificent park is fast rising to fame as one of the top safari parks in the world and the reason is its picture perfect landscape and more than 60 species of mammals which include most of the Big Five animals of Africa. The park is also attractive to the bird lovers as more than 400 species of birds live in South Luangwa providing an excellent bird viewing opportunity.
The park located in eastern Zambia in the largest rift valley of the continent spans on an area of 3,475 Sq. Miles. The famous Luangwa River flows in the middle of the park and increases the scenic beauty even more. There are plenty of lagoons in the valley that are full of exotic fish life and hippos which are perhaps the biggest attraction of the park as it has one of the highest population of hippos in the continent. If you are arriving from abroad then you will have to take a cheap flight to Lusaka the capital of Zambia and then you will have to hire a car for getting to the park. There are plenty of resorts and lodges in the park which cater to all kind of tourists ranging from the ones looking for a luxury accommodation to the ones trying to save some of their hard-earned cash by staying in a budget lodge.

The best way to explore the park is by taking a guided tour in the presence of a park ranger. The unique thing about South Luangwa national park is that you can take a night tour here as well which is prohibited in most other parts of the region. The night tour provides an excellent opportunity to view the animals like Leopards that rest in the daytime and are not visible.
The park has a high population of buffalos, antelopes, hyenas, elephants and has about 40 pride of lions. A safari bus service is available in the park and will be a cheaper option than hiring a car all by your self. The bus will take you the parts of the park with the highest chance of viewing wildlife and the park rangers travelling with you on the bus will protect you in case an unexpected danger emerges. Another activity that has made Luangwa national park famous worldwide is its walking safari.
Although walking in the middle of a park and close to wild animals can make you a little nervous the first time but in the presence of the park rangers, you are always in good hands. Walking safari is the best way to observe wildlife as it takes you just a few meters away from the animals.
