Mexico is truly blessed with the most stunning of the archaeological treasures of the Americas if not the whole world. Teotihuacan is the most famous, oldest and the largest of all these archaeological ruins. Situated only 50 km away from the capital, Mexico City, it dates back to the 1st century AD and is considered as the capital of the oldest pre-Hispanic civilization of the Americas. The civilization became a victim to the economic and environmental catastrophes and vanished in the 8th century AD, but the pyramids of Teotihuacan are the symbol of the engineering marvel of the people of that era.
If you are travelling from outside Mexico then the best option is to take cheap flights to Mexico City and take a bus or car for the Teotihuacan. There are many sites here that are worth visiting but the most popular of them all are the two largest pyramids in the centre of the Teotihuacán. The first is the Piramide del Sol, constructed in 100 AD and according to the archaeologists, it was the most important building for the Teotihuacan civilization. It is multi-storey structure and is evidence of just how to advance the Teotihuacan civilization was at the time when most of Europe was engulfed in the Dark Age.
The second-largest pyramid is the Piramide del la luna, which was built as a shrine or a religious building for the city and dominates the skyline of the city. The thing that astonishes most visitors is just how well planned the city is with a proper sewerage system. The city was divided into many quarters by huge avenues, and the gigantic size of the city made the people of later civilizations like Aztecs believe that it was constructed by the giants for the Teotihuacan.
