With so many historically significant tourist destinations to choose from, I chose Mombasa to explore the annals of Kenya. During the course of my travel, I discovered a few very unique highlights of the country that amused the sightseers and allow them to collect many memories as they walk past the historic land of Mombasa. The ethnic diversity of Portuguese, Arab and Asian-Mombasa displays a very brimming cultural potpourri to its tourists.
Amongst many tourist destinations that are must visit on your transit or holiday travel to Mombasa, few are notable like Fort Jesus and Mombasa Old Town. Fort Jesus is a standing example of 16th century’s culture at the southern edge of the town of Mombasa. It was declared as the UNESCO World Heritage.
This gives a perfect ambience to fulfil the photography passion with the backdrop of Portuguese architectural prowess. This great symbol of history has now become a spectacular highlight of Mombasa tourism. As you keep moving in the quest to explore the more historically popular buildings and architecture, you will discover the ostentatious streets adorning the Portuguese’s history. This is where your senses of smell lead you to the open-air market and street foods with the aroma of delicious cuisine.
This market tour is very inexpensive and you can shop quite a lot of stuff in a few pounds. After touring historical sites, your soul needs to indulge in natural beauty besides the white beaches and seashores. The other local tourist points also captivate the visitors with serene views. As far as the serenity of aquatic tourism is concerned, Mombasa Marine National Park, Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park, Shimba Hills National Reserve, Tsavo East National Park are few remarkable highlights of the city.
In addition to this, Haller Park, Jumba la Mtwana and Gede Ruins are also worth visiting at least once to view the cultural influences of various African, Arabs, Turkish, Persian and European inception. Visit the Kenya’a animal sanctuary at Haller Park to see the rare collection of animals and birds. Diana Beach of white sand dunes is, surely, meant for the couples to spend a quality time.
