If you have visited Iguazu with its enormous size, Niagara with its sheer power or Victoria with its stunning surroundings then you may think that you have seen all the best water falls on earth, but wait you cannot make this claim until you have seen the Kaieteur Falls in Guyana. Imagine looking at a water fall with 30,000 gallons of water rushing down per second in the middle of a mysterious and misty ancient jungle, and the best part there is a possibility you may be the only person watching this site at that moment of time, fascinating isn’t it!
Guyana because of its long civil conflict and the prevailing tension among different ethnic groups living in the country has long been ignored by the tourism industry. Although this lack of tourist traffic took its toll on the economy of the country but at least the natural beauty of the place stay uncorrupted. The only major airport of the country is in the capital and you will be taking cheap flights to Georgetown if you are travelling from outside of the country. A colonial town with many historical buildings, George Town really does not have anything else to offer to the tourist other than the lively night life of the city.
You can take a bus or hire a car for your journey to the Kaieteur Park, but if you are in good enough physical shape then we recommend you to trek overland in the company of a seasoned guide. The trek can be a fascinating adventure as you walk through the dense rain forest of Guyana and visit the friendly local villages along the route. The trek can be 4 to 7 days long depending upon which route you opt for and also on how fast you move.
You will hear its thunder long before you see the gorgeous fall, the scene is truly mesmerizing with thousands of gallons falling from a whopping 226 meters on the rocky but lush gorge. The water fall is pierced with rainbows if you visit it on a bright sunny day. As Guyana’ political scene is still thought to be a little unstable, though lot better than the last decade, you will not find many tourists at the park and you can enjoy its beauty in the solitude. You can hike to the top of the fall and if you are daring enough take a look beneath you to see just how massive the fall is. You can decide to camp anywhere in the park but its recommended that you take the advice of your guide for deciding a campsite as there can be a few poisonous reptiles in the area.
