The southern side of Namibia features the largest canyon of Africa known as the ‘Fish River Canyon’ which is one of the most alluring tourists’ destinations. It houses an elephantine abyss which has a length of about 160 kilometres and the width of 27 kilometres with the depth of about 550 metres. The Fish River is the largest river of Namibia which dissects deep below the plateau that is stony, dry and is scarcely wrapped with the aridity-repellent plants. The enticing public points are located near Habs which is about 70 kilometres away in the northern side of Ai-Ais. The immensity and magnificence of this great canyon compel a throng of people to take cheap flights to Windhoek and have the most astounding experience of their lives.
The San Bushmen considers that the curves and twists were engraved by Kouteign Kooru-the serpent who tried to escape but geology says that these gigantic canyons were formed approximately 500 years ago, not with the water erosion but due to the earth’s crust movement in the bottom of the valley. There are many incredible antiquated sites of Stone Age whose history dates back to millions of years.
These sites are so breath-taking and amazing that your camera will hardly be able to do justice because of its boundless exaltedness. The Canyon provides shelter to many animal species like Mountain Zebra, Leopard and Kudu. Besides there are various colourful species of birds such as Wagtails, Plovers, Egyptian Geese, hammerkops and Herons.
The Fish River Hiking Trail is a deep-rooted experience and is reputed as Africa’s top and the most adventurous hiking area. It starts at the northern end of the herculean canyon and cascades down towards a steep route by following the zigzag sandy river-strip throughout the way towards Ai-Ais. The tourists will be excited to complete the hiking during the daytime as for the night-stay the canyon does not provide any spot. The trail only gets open between mid-April and mid-September when the summers are not extreme and there is no fear of heavy flooding. The tourists are always advised to be athletic and medically fit for having an adventure in the monstrous canyon area.
When your hike ends at Ai-Ais don’t miss the hot sulphurous springs which justifies the name of the area, as Ai-Ais means ‘burning water’ and the temperature of the water can rise up to 60 centigrade. They originate from beneath the ground and are highly rich in useful salts and minerals, which are regarded as the treatment for various nervous and rheumatic disorders. The area also offers the facility of indoor spas where you can unwind and experience the extreme tranquillity after the long tiring time of hiking.
The Fish River Canyon provides the picturesque and unique landscape of charismatic hills. You will love to explore them in the early morning by taking a horse ride. The best time to visit this wonderful place is between May and September when it is cool and pleasant with a little sunshine in the daytime. So don’t miss the chance of ultimate thrill at this canyon.
