When in Rome do as the Romans do. But as first timer it can become difficult to try and decide on what to eat? The places are limitless, filled with heavenly scents but when the menu card is placed in front of you tend to choke and it becomes difficult to decide on what to order. Here are some suggestions to start you meal;
Starters or side orders:
Carciofi alla guidia: These are flattened and fried artichokes, usually served with fried zucchini flowers stuffed with anchovies and mozzarella cheese.
Coda alla vaccinara: This is an Italian delicacy, it is made from oxtail which is braised in a celery and tomato broth.
Gnocchi alla Romana: These are tiny potato and flour dumplings served with a choice of fresh tomato sauce or gorgonzola cheese sauce or with a simple combination of melted butter and sage leaves.
Carciofi alla romana: Also tender Italian artichokes which are laced with mint and garlic and braised in a mixture of water and special olive oil.
Main course:
Spagheti alla carbonara: How can you not visit Italy and try spaghetti? Be warned it is much different from the common copies made at home with meatballs. This spaghetti is piping hot pasta that is then immediately mixed with raw egg, black pepper and parmesan and served usually with bacon.
Bucatini all’amatriciana: This is a special sauce served with your choice of pasta (usually thick hollow spaghetti called Bucatini) The sauce is made from tomatoes, Italian bacon, grated Pecorino romano cheese, parsley and butter.
Saltimbocca: A famous savory veal dish; in this a veal escalope is layered with procuitto and sage leaves and finally sautéed in white wine.
Abbacchio scottaditto: A roasted Roman spring lamb known for its succulent flavor.
Dessert:
Roman pear patina: This ancient recipe has been passed down for generations and is considered a favorite of many. Made from poached pear puree mixed with honey, cumin, pepper and Vin Santo. And addedwith milk, eggs and olive oil for taste.
Dulcia Extravant: A specialty of the most notable restaurants made from fruits, nuts and fine chocolate.
Pears with Honey and Pecorino: This savory dessert is made from heated honey, slices of goat cheese and pears. Also a sweet delicacy and not to be missed.
