Cities which have a history of industrial development do not really gain much attention from a tourist’s perspective, but when a globally renowned football celebrity belongs to one of such vicinities then his/her fans around the world cannot help inquiring about these locations. One city with its celebrity which perfectly settles in this bracket is Sweden’s football icon Zlatan Ibrahimovic and his beloved hometown, Malmo.
Malmo, one of Sweden’s largest cities, is located in the south of the Scandinavian country and is known for having a high percentage of foreign immigrants. Arguably the spectacle which receives the greatest amount of attention from the public is the Turning Torso.
Located in Oresund strait, the Turning Torso is a 190m high residential and office apartment which is undoubtedly characterized as the tallest building In Scandinavia. It consists of 54 floors and has a structure which features a ninety degree twist from the bottom to the top. It has received widespread global acclaim as an engineering marvel. Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner parachuted onto the Turning Torso and then jumped off it in 2006.
Another fascinating tourist spot is the Malmo Castle, a 600 year old fortress located in the outskirts of the city. It is home to some collections of the Malmo museums. Aquariums and nature rooms have also been designed in the halls for the sake of visitors’ pleasure. The castle has also been used for holding prisoners over the centuries thus it does provide visitors with spine chilling occurrences.
Also of interest to tourists is the Malmo Konsthall, one of the largest exhibition halls in Europe for contemporary art. It holds about ten exhibitions every year and showcases collections of well-known artists like Van Gogh, David Shringley and Edvard Munch. It is also a much happening place as it is a host to events that take place round the year like theatre performances, films and lectures. It is a perfect spot for a family to spend their day at as it features a book store, children’s area and a restaurant that offers Swedish food.
People in search for a soothing day of relaxation and peace can visit the Ribersborgs open air bath. It is open all year round for skinny dipping and features different areas for men and women furnished with two saunas for each. It also features a mixed pool and a restaurant.
People with adventurous tastes can turn their attention towards Stapelbaddsparken, Malmo’s skateboarding primary rink. Skateboarding is a leisure sport much enjoyed by many of the local youngsters.
