Administered by Egypt, Ras Muhammad is one of the most magical and magnetic parks of this earth that is located at the extreme southern edge of Sinai Peninsula and dominates the Gulf of Aqaba and Gulf of Suez. The place attracts a large variety of all those tourists who grab cheap flights to Sharm-el-Sheikh– the national park is only 12 km from this destination and lies in the popular region of Red Sea Riviera.
The park covers the land area of almost 480 km² that is divided as 345 km² area of water surface and 135 km² of the land surface. The park was actually established with the aim to guard human activities especially fishing with different methods like knives and dynamite. It was also created to offer protection against the coastal development and urban sprawl as well. the park also features a small bay inlet that is called as Marsa Bareika and another inlet is also located across the park area known as Marsa Ghozlani.
Majorly the park consists of 2 islands, one is Sanafir and the other one is Tiran. There are many underwater caves that lie in Ras Muhammad and are formed as a result of earthquakes. A mangrove forest covers the land area of almost 0.9 hectares. Majority of the area is blanketed with sand dunes, coastal mud plains, gravel, wadis, mountains and deserts. The climate of the area is very dry and the winter season often experiences a very less rainfall. Hermatypic and fringing coral reefs cover the area around the shoreline.
There are more than 125 species of soft corals and in total there are almost 220 species of corals. These coral reefs are approximately 50 meters wide and 100 cm deep. The most popular reefs of the area are Yolanda Reef and Shark Reef. There are many others that draw the attention of plenty of researchers and adventurers- the most common ones are Shark Observatory, Old Quay, Marsa Ghozlani and South Bereika. SS Thistlegorm’s wreckage is also situated off the coastal area and attracts multitudes of divers.
The place provides shelter to more than 150 species of crustaceans, 100 species of mollusc, 25 species of sea urchins, 40 species of starfish and 1000 species of fish. Various other creatures like the hawksbill turtle, the green turtle and sea turtles also appear here regularly.
The park is one of the most extraordinary and astonishing settings of this world. It is a dramatically arid and slender peninsula area of this earth that inspires a large variety of people. Ras Mohammed’s most jaw-dropping and spell casting scenery is located underwater and this place features the best landscape. The magnificent array of pelagic fish and reef attract hundreds of tourists.
