Seychelles is situated in the Indian Ocean and is composed of 115 islands. One of the most popular areas is of Curieuse Island, which is known worldwide for its red earth, mixed with the rare and one of a kind Coco de Mer palms. Because of this colour of the soil, it was formerly called as Ile Rouge in 1768. Now it provides shelter to almost 500 Aldabra Giant Tortoise, 200 of which dwell in the wild and approximately 300 reside in Ranger’s Station. Its southern part features a mangrove swamp where there are many passages for the tourists.
Besides, the hawksbill turtle rookery, giant takamaka trees, coco de mer palms and several species of colourful birds like Seychelles Black Parrot, are the true attractions of the area. Many of the visitors just love to head towards Baie Laraie, where thousands of parrotfish live in shallow water and they are as large as 1.2 metres. You can also opt for an adventurous trail excursion that starts from Baie Laraie and finishes at Anse St. José.
Moving approximately 5 kilometres away from the capital, you will hit the Ste Anne Marine National Park that was established in 1973 to provide protection to the endangered wildlife. It is further categorized by 6 islands which are the constituent of Mont Fleuri district that is scattered on many kilometres. It possesses Ste. Anne Island (that has an area of about 2.19 square kilometres and is known for the luxurious Sainte Anne Island Resort), Cerf Island (it owns 3 hotels, L’Habitation, Fairy Tern Chalets and Cerf Island Marine Park Resort over the land area of almost 1.27 square kilometres), lle Cachee (the most beautiful site of bird watching with area of 0.021 square kilometres), Long Island (0.212 square kilometres), Moyenne Island(0.089 square kilometres) and Round Island( where a five star luxurious hotel is under construction). Today it serves as the best-loved tourist’s destination for snorkelling, glass-bottom boat excursions, swimming and scuba-diving.
Vallee de Mai Nature Reserve is also a very famous site of Seychelles that was also declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983 and is situated in the Praslin Island. In 1996, it was officially stated as the natural reserve because it houses a wide agglomeration of endemic Coco de Mer and palm forest. Apart from it the park also offers shelter to reptiles, snails, crustaceans, mammals and a variety of bird life including the rare species of Black Parrot.
