Each one of the South African cities has its own unique charm, like Cape Town is blessed with the scenic beauty that has become its trademark, Megalopolis of Johannesburg has the continent’s liveliest nightlife and Pretoria is the most peaceful city that you will ever find in Africa. In the same way, Durban with its butter-yellow sandy beaches that stretch for miles and resorts that are some of the best in the country has its own charm and attraction for the tourist.
If you like spending relaxing holidays on a beach then there can be no better city for doing just that than the gorgeous Durban. The resorts and cafes along its long beach provide perfect resting places and the exciting water sports in the region will give you ample excitement. The city also has a lively nightlife and can also provide you with an enjoyable shopping experience in its huge malls.
Durban is the busiest South African port and plays a pivotal role in the economy of the country. The city was built by the British and in the colonial era it was given the name of Port Natal. The city was famous for its sugar production and thousands of Indian immigrants were brought into the city by the British to work in the sugar plantations. The descendants of these immigrants make up a large part of the current city population making Durban the South African city with the highest Indian concentration. The city has its own international airport and you can find a cheap flight for Durban from most of the major European airports. Like the rest of the South African cities Durban has a pretty extensive tourism infrastructure so finding a hotel according to your taste and budget won’t be a problem here.
The biggest attraction of the city is, of course, its long beach that stretches for miles and has one of the softest sand in the country. If you are arriving in the city for a beach vacation then instead of staying in the center of the town try to book your self a room in the resorts along the beach which not only provide excellent view of the beach but also will provide you with some exciting opportunities for activities like scuba diving, snorkeling and surfing.
In the recent years skydiving has become a favourite activity for the tourists and if you think that you are up to it then you can head to Pietermaritzburg Airport where after paying a fee of R 1350 you can skydive from a plane in the company of a seasoned diver. The city centre is an attraction in itself as most of the buildings there are from the colonial era providing an excellent opportunity to take a glance at the architecture of that era. The only problem in staying in the central Durban is the high crime rate due to which most tourists try to find themselves accommodation facilities in the suburbs of the city which are both peaceful and have quite a lot of entertainment facilities like cinemas, nightclubs and bars.
