The Grand Canyon in Africa, The Fish River Canyon – Namibia

Have you visited the Grand Canyon in the USA? We bet it must have been a mesmerizing experience, but there is another canyon which is as stunning as the Grand Canyon if not more. It’s the Fish River Canyon in Namibia, spanning on an area of 165 km it’s the largest canyon in the continent of Africa. Its widest stretch is of 27 Km and the average of this spectacular canyon is 550 m. The view of this marvellous natural wonder of Africa is mind-blowing with the grandeur of its landscape and the calmness of the Fish River flowing in its belly.

You’ll be taking a flight to Windhoek the capital of Namibia and if visiting the canyon is your only reason for arriving in the country then head to Ai-Ais on a bus and hike to the Fish Canyon. It’s recommended that you travel to Namibia during the holiday season starting in July as at that time there will a lot of tourist traffic especially from South Africa, and you can join any of the tourist groups that are travelling to the Canyon. This way you’ll be saving a lot of your hard earned cash plus it’s always safe to travel in a group in such a dissolute place. Most tourists prefer finding cheap flights to Johannesburg and then contact a South African tour operator for arranging their tour to the Fish River Canyon and other destinations of Namibia.

The whole country of Namibia is so beautiful and picture perfect that it’s impossible to believe if you are in a dreamland or there in reality. And nothing is more beautiful in the country than the Fish River Canyon itself; the place has been given the status of a National Park by the Namibian government. A walk along the top ridge of the Canyon is an entertaining activity in itself but if you feel like it then you can head to the south end of the Canyon and indulge your self in a bath in the natural Hot Springs that are proved to be rich in Fluoride and Sulphur and are believed to be therapeutic. There is a resort here which includes a swimming pool with the water from these natural springs.

There are a few points of the park that provides the best view of the canyon, Hikers View and the Main Viewpoint being the most famous of them all. The Fish River that flows at the bottom of the canyon is at its strongest in the month of March and April while it diminishes to a trickle in the months of July and August.
